Cheap flight tickets are great. And with all the resources we have provided you, it should be easy work for you to book the cheapest ticket one can find. But before you click on the buy button, there are a few things you might need to reconsider. Cheap flights are missing some amenities that a person used to traveling by more expensive flights might have taken for granted.
Food and drinks
Find out what food and drinks are included in the price of the ticket, and what you can buy. Most cheap tickets won’t offer alcohol as a standard feature. But check if you can pay for it if you really need it. And find out how good the flight food is. Flights have never been renowned for good food, but with cheaper flights the condition is worsened.
What’s for fun?
Ask them what on-board entertainment they provide. Depending on the airlines you might get end up being very well entertained, or be left looking as sleep as the most worthwhile option. Cheap airlines can rarely afford to show you movies. But see if they offer at least some good books on board. Else make it a point to carry your own.
How’s the leg space?
This is something that is sacrificed in almost all cheap flights. For longer distance flights, not being able to stretch your legs can end up becoming extremely uncomfortable. Anything above 30 inches of seat pitch is ideal for economy class.
And how are the seats themselves?
Are they wide enough? Are they thick enough? Thinner seats can be very tough on your back. See if they have adjustable head-rest and lumbar support. Very few economy seats do. Also see if they recline far back enough to be comfortable.
Research on the airline reputation
Some airlines are known to be notoriously ill-behaved towards travelers of economy class. If you are travelling by any American or European based airlines you might be among the luckier people. But the airlines that offer the cheapest tickets are also often the worst offenders when it comes to behaving politely with fliers. Ask around to see if they respond to your requests politely. If they are going to haggle with you over everything from baggage limit to request for water, there’s no point in saving money.
Safety
Last but not the least, the value of safety cannot be undermined. Cheap flights are rarely praised for their safety standards. They have to cut costs somewhere, and sometimes that ‘somewhere’ ends up being the safety department. Do not put your life in danger for saving a few dollars. Check previous history of safety for the airline’s flights; that should be a good indication.
If you research well and book smartly, there is no reason why cheap flights cannot provide you a satisfying journey. Just don’t pin your hopes too high if you are in the cost-cutting mode.
